Seeding

Seeding is better done in the fall, although can be done during spring. Spring seeding causes competition with annuals that procreate by seed. These seeds are already in the ground and are ready to roll and make tough competitors.

Fall seeding can begin in late August and early September and the fall weather is a great compliment for growing cool season turf. Over seeding is one format. A Zspray Zplug with the optional over seeder enables over seeding while simultaneously pulling cores, enabling one operator to achieve the work quickly and efficiently. Pulling cores works in partnership with seeding achieving good results. Another option is to slit seed requiring a specialized machine along with more time and cost.

When seeding, adding a starter fert with an abundance of Phosphorus (P), the center number in the analysis, which will assist in seed germination and seedling development.

One of the most popular seed types today is a three cultivar turf type tall fescue, which results in a more durable lawn that is less susceptible to drought and disease. Fescue seed is cheaper and newer cultivars have been developed for lawns, although more seeding is required to achieve a full stand as fescue does not spread. The historical combination of perennial bluegrass and ryegrass requires more maintenance and is, thus, more expensive and problematic to maintain.
